Shan Lau

DIRECTOR & SENIOR ENGINEER

What’s your background?:
I’ve been an engineer for over 37 years, in the building game since I was a teenager. In the early 80s I designed a factory a day, adding to a total of 1200 factories in 4 years. I have been a checking engineer for councils for over 22 years.

Tell us about your role at DSL
Working like a donkey I suppose! I design, do site visits and supervision of projects. I also provide structural expertise for the universities such as RMIT and TAFE college.

What’s the best thing about working at DSL?
We are a vibrant and energetic company. We have many challenges from fixing illegal works, insurance work and demolition engineering. It’s a growth company with huge potential, it can be highly demanding but incredibly rewarding. Also I enjoy working and training the young engineers.

Anything else we should know?:
I have been practicing Kung fu since I was 5 years old and haven’t stopped since. I still train every night. Also, yum char is my religion and I love coffee.

Don Lau

ENGINEER

What’s your background?:
I graduated with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from Monash University and worked for the Department of Defence (Footscray) in the field of Munitions production for 11 years. After that, I worked in the Building and Construction field since 1989.

Tell us about your role at DSL
IT support and structural drafting.

What’s the best thing about working at DSL?
Vibrant environment, with a blend of ‘oldies’ and ‘youth’.

Anything else we should know?:
Food, food, food and photography
More food, food, food and photography
Music.

Christine Yap

OFFICE MANAGER

What’s your background?:
I’m not an engineer myself, but I’ve done a bunch of jobs at different places which has enabled me with an eclectic skill set. I was an assistant teacher and boarding house supervisor for a British school in South Korea, a website coordinator and supervisor for a property company in Malaysia and a gallery intern before the stars aligned and brought me to DSL in Melbourne.

Tell us about your role at DSL
Pretty much anything and everything outside of structural design and drafting. That includes handling accounts, scheduling appointments, screening phone calls, sending jobs out, scanning and filing, creating systems to increase productivity, ordering lunch, replenishing flowers, making coffee, redecorating – the lists goes on!

What’s the best thing about working at DSL?
The variety of tasks at hand. No two days are the same as every day presents itself with a new combination of responsibilities to fulfil.

Also there’s that special moment in the day where everyone sits down together for lunch.

Anything else we should know?
I'm a Crossfit coach!

Daniel Lau

DIRECTOR & ENGINEER

What’s your background?:
I Studied Bachelor of Civil Engineering/Business (Finance) at Swinburne University of Technology and trained under one of the most respected small engineering firms in Victoria, Pat Baygar & Associates Pty Ltd between 2009 and 2016.

Tell us about your role at DSL
I have been put at the cold front of designing and inspecting projects from start to finish and have worked on many large residential projects with architects, builders and owners.

What’s the best thing about working at DSL?
We are not just a team, we are a family..

Anything else we should know?:
I enjoy playing tennis, love sushi, can cook a meal to survive and I cannot sing or dance!

Franky Leowardy

ENGINEER

What’s your background?:
I have a Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering from RMIT and have been working with DSL Consulting for the entirety of my engineering career. I have completed numerous projects under the guidance of our senior engineers which varies from residential to commercial properties.

Tell us about your role at DSL
I am an engineer who assists with designing, calculating and preparing structural drawings and engineering reports for DSL projects.

What’s the best thing about working at DSL?
The most valuable thing from working in DSL is the company’s supportive environment. All the senior engineers are excellent team players who are always willing to provide guidance and support when needed, while allowing me enough freedom and independence to explore my own design ideas.

Anything else we should know?:
I am an outdoor explorer and adventurer, who loves kayaking, caving and hiking. My favorite sport is badminton and soccer. I’ve been a Manchester United fan since I was 7!.

What’s your background?:
We would like to keep this private..

Lucy
Bubbly and friendly, I keep us motivated! Just when we think we’re operating with full steam ahead, I come around to tell everyone that we can do better. I am the real lady boss.

Totti
The ying to Lucy’s yang, I bring an aura like no other. I am a calm presence who is always open for snacks, hugs, or a listening ear.
